Buddha Gear is Joy and Jason. Joy designs and sells hats, and has been for over 12 years. Jason is a guide and wellness coach, who has traveled extensively on his spiritual journey, wishing to help those experience their own spiritual awakening.
Together, they have co-created Buddha Gear, a company making handmade, unique head gear such as headbands, beanies and hats. Putting their money where their mouths are, they donate a beanie to a homeless shelter for each one that is sold (go buy one!)
Susan Morgain (SM): What was the impetus for starting this?
Buddha Gear (Jason): While traveling in Peru about 10 years ago, I had a powerful meditation and download to put a crystal in a bandanna so I could tie it over my third eye…I did and was really surprised how it intensified my meditations. (And) Since every crystal has a different frequency, different crystals tune me into a different experience…
SM: What gave you the idea to actually start the company?
BG: Well, when Joy and I started dating about 3 years ago she asked what all of the bandannas around my house were 🙂
I told here the story and she (being a headwear designer) created a prototype. We tweaked it a little and put symbols on them and the Buddha Band was born.
Since then we have added beanies, bandannas, dad hats and snapbacks to our line and have more on the back burner…
SM: How much as been given to homeless shelters so far?
BG: We have donated over 400 lbs of clothing and headwear in the last year. As far as the beanies, we gift one for every one sold at retail.
Our plan is to have 1,300 beanies for the shelter by the end of the year!!!
SM: When do you anticipate the Kickstarter campaign will be done and the dream realized?
BG: The kickstarter ended about a month ago but is still up for all of the info.

Check out all of the headbands, beanies and hats that come in different fabrics, & designs; you can get them plain or with really fun metaphysical designs. Know that when doing this, you are also donating to a homeless shelter.
I loved the headband that I received. The design is the phases of the moon. It came with a small bag of chakra crystals so that you can choose which one you would like to put into the hidden pocket to cover your third eye.
For the review itself, I brought the headband with me to yoga class and passed it around to my students. We were all agreed on how soft the fabric was and how much we liked the graphic. The only problem that most of us had was that the, since the majority of us have thin, silky hair, the headband would not stay in place and kept sliding around. The one of us with long full hair did not have the same issue. I would love to see this in a “less” slippery fabric specific to thinner, finer hair.
I would definitely get one; the idea of the hidden pocket for a crystal is, to me, brilliant.
